![]() Good question. Allow me to break it down for you in simple points. One of the power ups is the equivalent of a Mario Kart blue shell, and I think it wasn’t even planned to be. In Battle Mode, if you get the power up that flips your screen with your opponent’s (I don’t know its name, let’s just call it the Flip power up), there is a trick you can use to win the game, EVERY TIME. I understand that the idea of the power up is to help you out if you get in trouble, by swapping your screen with your opponent’s (assuming he’s doing better than you), but there is nothing to stop you from piling up a tower of Tetriminos in the centre of the screen, right to the top, then using the Flip power up just before the last brick ends your game. As soon as you flip it, your opponent is faced with an insurmountable tower to overcome and it’s game over for him immediately. Sure, you can use this power up honestly and sportsmanlike-ly if you want, but in the later stages you’re going to get so annoyed with losing that you’ll revert to dirty tactics. TRUST ME. One power up obscures your opponent’s screen with “mist”, and if it is used on you, the only way to clear it quickly is to blow into the 3DS’ mic. I do not want to sit blowing into my console on public transport, so that means I never want to play Tetris anymore, as all of my 3DS gaming is done on my commute to and from work. In the Battle Mode, you CAN’T TURN THE POWER UPS OFF or even select which ones you’d like to use. A simple options screen could have prevented all this bullshit, instead it’s turned the power ups into GAMEBREAKERS. So, here’s my recommendation –don’t buy it if you don’t like cheap power ups and looking stupid on the train. Of course it does have the basic “Marathon Mode”, but this is just a clone of the original game. While Tetris was the game I never stopped returning to as a 10 year old with a Gameboy, these days expectations are a little higher. Maybe I like the classic rules but want to apply them to Battle Mode. How simple would that have been, Nintendo? Very.
Oh, and the 3D effect is basically nonexistent. My advice – ditch Tetris and buy A Link Between Worlds instead, that’s what I did.
